Proverbs 25:25 – Wisdom of Writing a Letter

Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a distant land.

Good news from a distant land can come in many forms but my personal favorite is receiving a long form letter from a loved one. We all have a deep need for good news. I was just reminded about the story of Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman at the well where she asked Him about living water. In John 4:13-14, Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water that I give him will never be thirsty again. But the water that I give him will become in him a spring of water [satisfying his thirst for God] welling up [continually flowing, bubbling within him] to eternal life.”. What’s better than cold water when we are thirsty… never being thirsty again!

    Action Idea

First things first… receive the living water Jesus gives to us all. Just because someone gives you something doesn’t mean you have to receive it. It’s your choice to receive it or not. Receiving Jesus is the wisest and best choice you could ever make in all of eternity. Additionally, write to someone you feel led to write a long-form letter sharing some good news. If you’re not sure who that is ask Holy Spirit to help you. He will give you the direction, you just have to listen for His response. Once you sense it, don’t question it… hear and then obey. It’s going to be refreshing for both of you.

Proverbs 24:27 – Wise Investment Prioritization

Prepare your work outside and get it ready for yourself in the field; afterward build your house and establish a home.

This proverb is all about prioritization of getting your financial life in proper order before you invest money towards the comforts of a home or other large purchases. I remember two situations where I didn’t follow this wisdom and it made a bad situation even worse because I prioritized incorrectly. The principle of delayed gratification is important to apply here. The principle of delayed gratification means it’s better in most situations to delay the immediate reward for a greater and more fulfilling reward later.

    Action Idea

Start practicing the principle of delayed gratification in your life. Save up 3 to 6 months of income. Give away 10% of your income to your church. Build up a diverse investment portfolio. Be outrageously generous with the money you earn. Establish a great home and live a great life.

Proverbs 23:20-21- God’s Word is Truth and Love

Do not associate with heavy drinkers of wine, or with gluttonous eaters of meat, for the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, and the drowsiness [of overindulgence] will clothe one with rags.

God’s advice many times can be hard to hear but it’s wise to remember God’s Word is Love and He is speaking to us as his sons and daughters. I am also reminded of how the religious leaders were freaking out because Jesus was eating and drinking with the kinds of sinners that this verse warns us about.

What advice is right? Both. I always hated that answer. Ha! This led me to do some research on this verse, specifically, the first part of the verse where it says “Do not associate with…”. This part can also be translated as “Do not be among…”, meaning this… don’t do it yourself. Living a life of drunkenness or as a glutton will put you on the path to poverty and not just financially. “Do not be among…” also means it’s wise to protect yourself from having heavy drinkers and gluttons in your inner circle of friends you have given access to influence you.

    Action Idea

Reflect on your own life and those who are in your inner circle in relation to this verse. Do you need to make some changes in your eating habits? Do you need to change who you allow to influence you? Answer those questions and ask God for help and His wisdom to take the appropriate action in love.
