Proverbs 31:18 – Avoid Losing Momentum

Reflective Thinking
The wise person avoids the mistake of taking their foot off the gas when they see they are making good gains. I’ve been guilty of this most of my life. This is what happens when you are motivated by pain and the behaviors you took to get those gains are accomplished through will power and not through belief and identity. It’s like a thermostat. Your identity and beliefs will always bring you back to the temperature or behaviors you are comfortable with. You have to change your beliefs and how you see yourself in order to have the sustained gains you are looking for. This is the best kind of habit change. Please don’t let this discourage you. This is a great thing. You can make the gains permanent and ever increasing by changing your beliefs instead of just brute force will power that will eventually fade away. Also, remember this, just like a car in motion is easier to turn than one that is parked, a change in a belief happens best when taking action. You want to avoid losing momentum if possible.
Action Idea
Reflect on your last few wins or gains and determine if you reverted back to your old behaviors before the gains. If you notice you’re always hitting a wall and losing the gains you worked hard to achieve there are likely limiting beliefs keeping you at a certain level of success. Next, you need to identify those limiting beliefs and reprogram your heart and mind right beliefs. You can do this. You can make permanent and positive change happen through changing your beliefs leading to changing your habits. Atomic Habits by James Clear is a great book on this line of thinking. Read it!

Sowing and reaping. Cause and effect. If this, then that. These are common phrases you ought to study. It’s wise to pay attention to things in life that are inevitable when they happen a specific way. You simply need to pay attention and it will help you understand how to thrive each day. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Do not judge or you too will be judged. There are many examples in the Bible and throughout life that you can write on the tablet of your heart so that when you come across a situation in life to apply the wisdom it flows from your heart without thinking. It’s who you are.
Action Idea
Read, meditate on, and apply the following words from Jesus in your life: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that
house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27 NIVProverbs 29:11 – How To Stop Losing Your Temper

My first thought is “DUH… but that’s easier said than done…” Am I right?!? My next thought about this wisdom is a little more applicable to life. The best answer to being wise and using self-control and not always losing our temper and showing anger is this… receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior. You see, when we are born again, Christ comes to live within us through the Holy Spirit which is the Spirit of power, love
and self-discipline.Action Idea
If you have not already given your life to Christ… that is the first thing I recommend. The next thing is to change our beliefs and our ways of thinking. It’s a process but I’m certain you can do this. This is a process of writing God’s word on the tablet of your heart through reading, meditating, prayer, and contemplation. It’s called Devine Reading or Lectio Devina. Today, start the process with 2nd Timothy 1:7: For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]. Lectio Devina is another powerful tool you can use to grow in God’s wisdom.
